April Survivor

Verse may drive her mad
Desperate poet’s story
April survivor

Good Morning! And welcome to May, aka decompress month. Yesterday was May the 4th and Shawn and I went to the party at the Arizona science center. As we were getting in the car, Shawn asked me for directions to the science center. I don’t know; it’s downtown. It’s not like we haven’t been there before. Shawn looked it up and it said, now closed. I laughed, I know it’s an after hours party for old geeks. You had to be over 21 to attend. I had the Romulan Ale (not Roman autocorrect) and Sonic Screwdriver. Shawn had a Butterscotch Wookie (I think) I can’t remember now. And we basically got to roam the science center without little beings running all over the place. Then we went over to Grand Ave. It was first Friday. That is where I printed the May the 4th be with you poster. Yes, I rolled the printing press myself.

And as you can see, the verse did not drive me mad. I wrote over 30 poems in April, counting the #haikuchallenge poems for twitter. I missed one prompt. But I did more than one poem for a couple of the prompts so over all I’d say it was a successful month. Arizona schools got back to work yesterday. Gretchen had a full day of school again. Yay! But Thursday was Rachael’s last exam for her semester, and still no word on her summer gigs. She is now home. Which will be a good thing for a little while anyway as Gretchen has to take the math placement test at EMCC for her fall ACE course. She was going to take it today after her final Eng 102 class, but she looked it up and the testing center is only open Monday – Friday. Rachael will have to bring her over one day after school. I told Gretchen she should have taken it on one of her days of no school, but did she listen to her mother?

NaPoWriMo Prompt – And now, for our prompt (optional, as always): today, I challenge you to write a poem in the form of a review. You can review either animate or inanimate things, real places or imaginary places. You can write in the style of an online review (think Yelp) or something more formal that you might find in a newspaper or magazine. (I imagine that bad reviews of past boyfriends/girlfriends might be an easy way to get into this prompt, though really, you can “review” anything in your poem, from summer reading lists for third graders to the idea of the fourth dimension).

When Mimi and Poppo were here in March we trekked to the bookstore. Gretchen did not go because she wasn’t feeling well.  After Rachael and I checked out the young adult lit section, I brought her over to the sci-fi section. I picked up a new Doctor Who book for Gretchen. Rachael saw several more books she was interested in reading as well. Gretchen finished reading Dead of Winter awhile ago and gave me a spoiler. Also she told me how it was written in letters (epistolary). Yes, mom saw a teaching moment. Dead of Winter is part of the Doctor Who history collection. My two favorite genres – sci-fi and historical fiction. Plus Gretchen’s spoiler made me want to see how everything works out in the end.

Netflix finally updated Doctor Who – though a little girl I know has been using iTunes gift cards to stay up to date on her Doctor Who.  Also we visited Nonnie at Christmas and were able to see the 50th anniversary episode and Matt Smith’s farewell there.  And right now, Nonnie is about an hour away and I’m writing #haikuchallenge haiku instead of the last minute tidying I should be doing.  I did get a lot of cleaning done yesterday.  Dad and Rachael went off to work.  I told Gretchen we’d be cleaning.  Well Mom cleaned and let Gretchen sleep in.  When I did go into her room to wake her up, I got a big hug.  Apparently she had a dream I died and she was very happy to see me.  Love getting hugs from 13 year olds. 😉

Then when Dad and Rachael got home, Dad was all excited to show me a video of Rachael in a car. By his excitement, I thought she was behind the wheel. No she was the passenger. Why was this so exciting? Yeah I’m not a car aficionado. Dad made a comic with his 280Z complaining about how I keep calling it a her. His new baby is a guy apparently but he treats it like a mistress, in my opinion, so I’m sticking with female references. 😛

April 19, 2012.  I’ve shared the link to my gather page for this poem earlier.  But I was wondering how I could work out a concrete poem on wordpress.  I can get the shape accurate but I can’t seem to change the text color.  I’ve right clicked font color and I’ve clicked on text color up in the toolbar.  Nothing happens for either.  So I know I can write a shape poem in April just hope I don’t want to play with color.  Any suggestions? April is only two days away…

April 4, 2012 The prompt for this besides writing an abecedarian was to use two foreign words/phrases.  I was able to work in three.  My Little One is a huge Doctor Who fan; therefore, the opening phrase was a no brainer.  I think she enjoyed turning 11, because Matt Smith is her favorite doctor.  She just finished reading her fourth Doctor Who media tie-in novel.  I was talking to her about it this morning on the walk to the bus stop.  The one she just finished was about daleks.  She said it ended well not cheesy like the ending of the previous one with the Doctor and Clara visiting the U.S.

Luckily the school’s book fair is this week.  She has already been and has new books to read.  Her birthday – 13! is in ten days maybe it’s a good time to get a 5th tie-in novel.

Reading – Pass it on…

Every morning I check the Little One’s backpack to make sure she has everything for school. As she heads out the door, she always says, “I feel like I’m forgetting something,” and I reassure her she hasn’t. This morning I noticed two books, one she just finished reading.

I shook my head and admonished her older sister. See what happens when you become a book dealer? Your younger sister turns into one too. Sure enough when I ask the Little One why she has two books, she told me her friend wants to read the one she just finished.

Then I heard yesterday another friend took the book she is currently reading and started to read it, asking her where she got it. Mom, who happens to be a book dealer herself, knows where to get the good stuff. The Little One is currently on her second Doctor Who media tie-in novel. I know how to give my little fan her Doctor Who fix. I can’t believe she has friends who think media tie-in books are cool.

I didn’t start reading Star Trek books until high school, and then I didn’t bring them to school. I had a book dealer mom, as well, but she didn’t support my Star Trek habit. I had to buy those books myself. See, I am a cool mom, handing out the fun brain candy. 😉
